I do not buy tools just to buy tools. I hate to store things just because I bought them and do not use them. Therefore, tool purchases are well thought-out. After some careful consideration the next tool purchase shall be... Lee Valley Spokeshave (both the flat and the round sole).

Some disaster averted... I realized that the cubbyholes will hold the smaller planes, but will have to plane for planes the size of a 5 1/4 or larger. In order to get the 5 1/4 to fit on the till, it will have to be placed higher up.

I heard a good quote once... "If you think you are smart, try woodworking." I think of that every time I work on a project - there is ALWAYS something lurking around the corner that you did not expect and surely did not plan for.

The angle that will work for one plane will not work for another. Not only is the smaller plane less stable, the blade and tote stick out past where the door will be located when closed.

The after-thought cubbyholes are installed and the top shelf is in place. I cannot say that I am please with how the shelf was installed without sliding dovetails, but as an after-thought it came together decent enough.

I planed some more cherry down to about 3/8" to make five dividers for the cubbyholes. Not wanting to make any particular part of this cabinet tool specific, I sized the cubbyholes rather large - large enough to house the widest of my smaller planes. The cubbyholes are wide enough to hold more than one plane if needed.

The thinness of the dividers made clamping with regular clamps a bit difficult. I decided to apply pressure with a couple pieces of wood clamped across my bench . As you can see from the glue squeeze-out, it worked rather well.

This is not the first design change nor will it be the last... I decided to put a row of cubbyholes for smaller planes underneath the larger plane till. I have also decided against storing the planes horizontally and will store them vertically.

In order to install the cubbyhole dividers, I used a router plane with a 1/4 blade and cut 1/8" dadoes to house a small tenon that will be cut into the end of the divider.

The hardest part of building this cabinet is trying to plan for the future - What tools will I own? What tools will I eventually sell or outgrow? I just don't have the answers to those questions. So, for now I think I will plan to utilize as much space without planning around any particular tool.

I thought about storing the planes vertically, but there seemed to be so much wasted space. Upon rotating the planes horizontally I can see how shelves and cubbyholes (for the smaller planes) will let me use more space. I will then put small doors over the larger planes so I can store smaller tools (chisels, rulers, etc.) on both sides of those doors.

Outside edge of the cabinet and the sliding dovetail joints were planed flush. Now to plan out the inside features...

The top sliding dovetail shelf has been installed and glued into place. The bottom shelf (that will later house a sliding dovetail installed divider) is being fitted. I cut most of the sliding dovetail a hair undersized so that it will slide easily into the female portion of the dovetail joint. I left the last inch or so a bit tight so that it would snug the joint tight when it was seated fully into place.

Before the lower shelf is installed I am cutting the sliding dovetail for the drawer divider. Most of the waste was removed on the table saw. The remainder of the joint will be completed on the router table.
